SUGGESTIONS for the new housing currently being constructed at the old Abbey Garage site in Tavistock were last week put forward by members of Tavistock Town Council. The development, being undertaken by West Devon Homes, will provide urgently needed affordable accommodation in Tavistock town centre. The board of West Devon Homes wrote to the council to ask if members had any suggestions for the new development, which occupies a prominent position at the northern entrance to the town, just off Dolvin Road. Cllr Norma Woodcock said: ?I was interested in why Dolvin Road is called Dolvin Road. Apparently it is a corruption of Godolphin. The widow of Judge Glanville married a Francis Godolphin and they moved to live in Tavistock ? I would like to propose it should be called Godolphin House. It?s a nice name and historically it seems relevant.? Cllr Woodcock did have another suggestion, in recognition of the former architect to the Duke of Bedford who went by the name of Theophilus Jones ? but she agreed Godolphin was less of a mouthful. The council?s finance committee agreed to send Cllr Woodcock?s suggestion to the board of West Devon Homes for consideration.
