A SPORTS woman from Spreyton came away with a medal after taking part in the Transplant Tennis Court Competition held last weekend in Cheshire.

Team manager for the Exeter Kidney Transplant Unit, Wendy Sincock, was among 30 transplantees playing against professionals at Knutsford Sports Centre in Cheshire.

Wendy, who had a kidney transplant ten years ago, took part in the competition to raise awareness for the constant need for organ donors.

She said: 'Without my donor, I probably wouldn't be here today.

'Becoming a donor is a wonderful thing to do and I would encourage anybody to become one.

'We do it to promote organ donors and try to get as much publicity as possible. Obviously, without donors, we wouldn't be here to do the exercise.'

Wendy, who has also suffered several heart attacks in the last ten years and had a right hip replacement, has won more than 60 medals.

She won gold in the 100m backstroke in Thailand two years ago and was selected to take part in the World Transplant Games in Australia.

'Unfortunately, I won't be at the World Games but I am definitely going to the British Games in Coventry in July.

'When doctors told me I'd never be able to take part in the games again, I was devastated.

'But in time they did different heart stress tests on me, to check everything was pumping well.

'It all turned out fine in the end and I just got stronger and stronger.

'I have received so much support from family, friends and neighbours but the main thing is, people recognise what I am doing and why I am doing it.'
