Devon Cup Okehampton U14s 11 Cullompton U14s 3 HAVING progressed through the preliminary round, courtesy of Newton Abbot, Okehampton came up against a determined and resolute team intent on spoiling good possession. Okehampton opened well and made inroads into their opponents? defence only to be rebutted by excellent tackling. Cullompton began to disrupt Okehampton?s possession and mounted a number of attacks through the middle only to be brought down by serious tackling, Will Searle and Brennan Townsend to the fore. Midway through the first half Okehampton pushed deep and won a penalty in front of the posts. Eric Bright kicked the penalty, followed immediately with another after a further indiscretion in a ruck on the 22. Playing into the wind in the second half, Okehampton gave away a penalty which was kicked by Cullompton. But Okehampton launched a number of forward drives into their opponents? 22. Running good ball and controlling the lineouts and rucks Okehampton played the percentage game and pinned their opponents back with text book rugby. With Matt Harding, Martin Hann, Chris Pyle and Chris Knott outstanding in the forwards, pressure told and Chris Knott crashed over for the deciding try. With Chris Humphries taking two-handed lineout ball, Okehampton played out the final ten minutes on their opponents? line, but do or die defence kept the attacks out. Training - Friday 5.45pm. Tavistock U14s 17 Crediton U14s 20 WITH players of both sides running and tacking hard there were many niggling injuries and a steady stream of replacements changed the balance of both teams. Tavistock started in enterprising style and ran the ball into the Crediton 22 through good individual drives and slick passing moves. From the base of one ruck Tavistock prop Joe Hair picked up and powered over the line to open the scoring, Josh Leeson?s conversion attempt coming back off an upright. Crediton hit back almost immediately. With a threequarter move which sucked in the Tavistock cover defence they released their speedy right winger who crossed for a try. Again the Tavistock defence was found wanting and the Crediton backs scored a second try to take the lead. Tavistock hit back and a series of good penetrating runs by Hair and Dan Oner with good ball retention by the forwards led to hooker Rollo Whitehouse diving over to score. Leeson kicked the conversion. James Lockley showed pace and power to score, rounding off a good back line move. The second half belong almost entirely to Crediton who pressed Tavistock back on the defence and scored two good tries through their good threequarter line so taking the lead and ultimately the match. Although the home side rallied towards the end with good individual runs, they were unable to add to their score. Tavistock U13s 43 Crediton U13s 15 FOR the second week in a row Tavistock racked up a hatful of tries with Coker opening the account flying down the wing. Others followed from Dawe and Burdfield, and Coker crossed for his second, Longden making three conversions. The forwards put in an excellent display against a larger pack which contained some good players and the Ferguson brothers were much in evidence in both attack and defence. At the end of the half Crediton managed to cross for a try which was responded to at the start of the second half when Burfield ran in for his second from the near the halfway line. This was followed by his hat-trick score. Crediton put together their best phase of the game and scored two tries of their own before Longden put in another long range try and made a conversion to seal the match. Teignmouth U13s 12 Okehampton U13s 24 A MUCH improved performance from Okehampton led to a good game of rugby at Teignmouth. With the forwards working hard and controlling the set pieces, better ball went to the backs. The backs then controlled, running some good moves. Sam Ewen at scrum half led from the front, linking well with Tom Fogerty and Matthew Johns, allowing Matthew to score the first of his three tries. Good tackling from Kieran Mitchell and Henry Cooper kept Teignmouth at bay. The forwards took control and Buster Francis made good ground, linking with the rest of the forwards and supported well by Chris Courtier and George Speak. The second half started promisingly with a great run by the backs linking with the forwards, ending with a sprint for the line by Thomas White scoring a try. From the returning kick off Matthew Johns showed his individual skill, running through the Teignmouth team to score a try. Teignmouth secured a late consolation try and Okehampton ended a fine game by another try by Matthew. After a tour of Devon, Felix Gardiner came into the game for the second half and showed how he has improved this season. Launceston RFC U12s 21 Tavistock RFC U12s 7 THE physically stronger Launceston team took possession from the start, driving into the Tavistock half but met with resistance from a spirited Tavistock. It was a game where the forwards play was crucial. Notable performances were delivered by Kristian Sprangle, Conor Scott, Martin Budden, Dominic Dowson and a returning from injury Max Gratton in the scrum. Sam Northmore used his speed to make considerable ground but was unable to reach the try line before interception from the Launceston defence. Launceston efforts were rewarded by two tries from their persistent pressure finding gaps in the defence. There were excellent clearances to touch by Jonty Newton and Henry Salmon removing danger from the Tavistock line. As the match progressed Tavistock increased their pressure, winning lineouts and ensuring the benefits of the Launceston wins from the scrum were negated by swift tackling. The efforts were rewarded by a single try from a prostrate Frazer Bayliss stretching over the line with a Launceston player clutching his legs. The second half showed a more determined Tavistock taking the game into the Launceston half and eing unlucky not to have scored on at least two occasions. Launceston achieved their third and final try from a series of well executed passes across their forward line. Training Sunday from 10am to noon at Tavistock RFC ground. Any prospective U12 who would like to try rugby will be welcome - just come along on the day.
