SANTA has delivered £80,000 in grants to Callington Council towards ambitious plans for one of the town's parks. The money from Viridor Credits and the County Environmental Trust will fund a six-metre climbing wall and a junior play area in a £130,000 scheme at Launceston Road Recreation Field, catering for toddlers to teenagers. Nine different grants have been applied for to fund the project which will include a large toddler/junior area, a skateboard area, fitness assault course, hardstanding space for games like basketball and five-a-side football and a barbecue area. Viridor Credits has awarded £46,000 and the County Environmental Trust £34,000. Callington town clerk Lynda Small said: 'As these are the two big grants we applied for we are extremely pleased with this start to our fundraising.' Chairman of the council's outside services committee Denise Winfindale said: 'The young people have designed it and chosen the equipment and it's down to them and the hard work by the clerk. 'We hope to hear about the other grants in the New Year and we are confident we will get all the money.' She said with the youth involved in the project they would hopefully conduct a bit of self-policing and look after the site just like the skateboard park in the Saltash Road Recreation Field. The current facilities at Launceston Road consist of a young children's play area and a large field. Mrs Winfindale said contrary to what some people thought a big green field to play in was not what the youngsters wanted. Special consultations were held with mixed age groups, with more interesting and challenging play equipment high on the wish-list. A survey conducted about the recreation field earlier in the year revealed that it was very under-used, with 48% of people who responded never going there, 28% rarely visiting and 9% not knowing of its existence. The news of the grants follows hot on the heels of more than £13,000 of funding for the play area on the Lamorna Estate. A range of equipment for young children, new seating and security fencing is due to be installed and a paint-the-playground day is planned to brighten up the area. The play area had been subject to vandalism and neglect over the last few years.
