THE REV Alex Welby arrived in 18th century style for a sermon in Meeth on Monday. Mr Welby arrived on horseback at St Michael and All Angels Church to revive the tradition of the 10-shilling sermon. The West Gallery Singers entertained, also in 18th century costume, with a selection of traditional songs, sacred and secular. The event has been resurrected to celebrate former resident Samuel Jerman?s donation of the sum of ten shillings to the village on his death in 1758, to pay for a sermon to be preached every year on the date of his burial - December 6. This year was a double celebration, also marking the 300th anniversary of the plasterwork Royal Coat of Arms being placed in the church.
