ANCIENT and native woodland across Dartmoor can be regenerated with enhanced rates of funding thanks to the creation of a priority area. The Forestry Commission has worked with Dartmoor National Park Authority, Natural England and the Woodland Trust to create the area, which will enable funding to be targetted at the clusters of these woodlands. Laura Jones, regional director for the Forestry Commission, said the ancient and native woodlands of Dartmoor provide ?a much loved element of the historic landscape of the area as well as being of high conservation value?. The enhancement of the woodlands will also help the wildlife that thrives there. The funding available assists owners to bring their woodlands into management to fulfil their true potential, which can include anything from producing timber to providing a quality experience for visitors. The enhanced rates for the management of existing woodland or the creation of new woodlands comprises an additional £1,000 per hectare for native woodland creation in appropriate locations and an 80% contribution towards the cost of work in existing woodland which maintains or enhances their special qualities.
