MR Jackson?s letter (February 3) misses the real point, which is that the majority of people simply do not understand ? people like him assume everyone understands the issues of the EU. He is quite right that if this country followed the rules we could not change asylum rules. He, and every commentator, must talk about leaving the Treaty of Rome. Any member can do this. This country is in a hugely strong position to say this to the other member states. If I were in that position, to say that we were going to pull out, the squeals from the other signatories who would lose our money to fund profligate twits in Brussels and elsewhere, would bring cries of ?What do you want from us for you to stay in?? We do not need this treaty which is transparently so damaging to all of us here and, ultimately, those whose economies are vastly different and cannot be transformed in ?a trice?. Political claptrap. Mr Jackson must forget his own acceptance of what has to happen, and spend most of his time explaining what has gone on and is going on. Start with Edward Heath.
