THE RSPCA is appealing for information following allegations of cat shootings in North Tawton.
The charity was alerted to the potential shootings by a resident of the village, who was concerned after hearing that cats in the town had been shot and badly injured with air rifles.
RSPCA inspector Suzy Hannaby said: 'I have had concerned calls from cat owners living in North Tawton who have heard these rumours.'
Upon investigation Inspector Hannaby could not find any evidence to support the claims, and although residents of North Tawton had heard rumours of the shootings, they were unable to provide information about any specific animals which had been shot, or their owners.
Insp Hannaby said: 'As of yet I have not been able to find evidence of a single cat which has been shot in the area, and no-one can tell me where the rumours have come from or if there is any truth in them.'
'I would hope the lack of evidence means that we are just dealing with unfounded rumours but I would remind the public that the RSPCA is a charity and we rely on the public to be our eyes and ears and report cruelty and neglect.
'If cats have been shot or injured it is important that people report it to us or the police as soon as possible after it happens.'
Anyone with specific information about animal cruelty or neglect is urged to contact the RSPCA cruelty and information line on 0300 1234 999. All calls are in confidence.
