Devon D division Whitchuch Wayfarers v Ottery St Mary
WHITCHURCH Wayfarers faced bottom of the table Ottery St Mary with high hopes of gaining much needed points.
Batting first and at 50-1 the omens looked good. With a strong batting line up the prospects for a high score were good.
However, man of the match Johns (28-4) had other ideas his tight bowling taking three off the top order. Credicott (47), and the welcome return of Woodrow (59), ensured the Wayfarers had a score over 200.
In the field a halfway score of 80-3 with Trembath (28-2) bowling well it looked a long haul for Ottery.
Townsend (35) and Johns (65 no) proved both considerable resistance and a steady increase in scoring that took the match to a tight finish.
Once again a lack of penetration and giving the opposition three extra overs through extras proved their downfall as Ottery crept over the line.
Although this was a disappointing loss the return of key players to the squad could provide a surprise for higher placed teams in future fixtures.
This weeks fixtures: Whitchurch firsts travel to Ashburton on Saturday with the seconds hosting Plymstock thirds. On Sunday Whitchurch U13s are at home while the ladies team travel to Torquay; on Monday the U11s are at home to Plymouth Mountwise. The TEL A side are at home to Gunnislake on Tuesday.
