Composting garden waste and card has been given the green light by more and more residents who are using West Devon?s free Saturday Bring scheme. Every three weeks, a recycling vehicle and crew visit one of three different sites in the more rural areas of the borough ? Northlew, South Zeal and Leg-O-Mutton near Yelverton car park ? and residents are encouraged to bring along their garden waste and card to the collection points. In the 12 weeks since the scheme began in April, 15 tonnes has been collected and diverted from landfill to go back on the land as nutrient-rich compost. The scheme, which is being piloted for one year by West Devon Borough Council, has been broadly welcomed by residents. Den Adams, from Northlew, said: ?The scheme is ideal for me. I enjoy my gardening and knowing that this waste is going to be used as compost is excellent.? Anthony and Tricia Stock from Harpers Hill also gave the scheme the thumbs up. Mrs Stock said: ?We have a large garden so being able to bring our garden waste here is great. ?I?d like to see the Bring scheme become more regular for areas like ours.? Cllr Chris Jenkins, chairman of the borough council?s environment and community committee said that hundreds of residents were using the Bring scheme. He said: ?I have been extremely impressed by the enthusiasm of residents for this scheme but we still have a very long way to go if we are to stay ahead of our recycling targets and reduce our landfill waste.?
