WITH reference to the horseback tug of war teams in the Times issue of January 27.

My father, Owen Morshead, who was one of four brothers to fight and survive the Great War, was a Lamerton lad.

While serving with the Royal Engineers he had a few days R and R (rest and relaxation) a few miles behind the Somme front line and he more than once joined a team of other officers for a bare back tug-of-war game and was delighted when he and his horse, Charlie, won.

Phoebe Woollcombe, Bere Alston

l Mrs Woollcombe told the Times that one story her father told her was that when his father as a Royal Engineer was visiting a trench occupied by the Devonshire Regiment (the Devons) he noticed a most welcome etching. Carved out of the chalk in the trench by one artistic Tommy was a line of white geese with the inscription 'Tavistock Goosey Fair'.
