A WARNING was this week issued by Okehampton?s fire chief, following a blaze in a house at Ramsley, near South Zeal last Wednesday. Two fire crews from Okehampton were called to deal with a blaze in the bedroom of a detached house in the village. Firefighters had to use breathing apparatus and a hosereel to deal with the fire in the two-storey detached house ? the first floor of the building was heavily smoke-logged by the fire. Station officer Ian Donovan said the fire had been caused by a lighting fitting. Mr Donovan said: ?The blaze was due to an electric light fitting which can be attached to an object with a crocodile clip. ?The unit is plastic in construction and we are warning people to be very careful where they attach the clip to ? in this case, it was fixed to some bedding and obviously the heat from the bulb ignited the plastic and in turn ignited the surrounding materials.? Mr Donovan warned householders to make sure this type of fitting was fixed to non-combustible objects. There were three adults and three children in the house at the time of the fire, which occurred at around 8.25am in the morning ? they were able to escape from the building safely before firefighters arrived.
