THE Woodland Trust have called for urgent action to halt the destruction of Devon's ancient woods.

There will be two local walks taking place among a series of 75 nationwide walks to highlight the problem, on Saturday, October 20, and Sunday, October 21.

These walks will be at Wray Cleave on Dartmoor National Park and Okehampton.

The Woodland Trust, the UK's leading woodland conservation charity is calling on everyone to join one of the walks and pledge their support to halting the loss of the UK's richest wildlife sites, ancient woods. The Woodland Trust say these woods are Britain's equivalent of the rain forest.

Ancient woods are those at least 400 years old. Today they cover only two per cent of the country and those that are left are quickly disappearing.

The Woodland Trust say nearly half the UK's ancient woodland has been ruined since the 1930s, mainly through conversion to conifer plantation and clearance for agriculture.
