THE latest guided walk to explore hidden corners of Belstone parish will visit the hamlet of Priestacott and continue out onto the moor above the East Okement in West Cleave.
The 1842 tithe map of Priestacott shows a different settlement pattern to that of today, so the walkers will learn how the houses came and went. Above West Cleave is Watchet Hill Cottage, a remote dwelling immortalised in one of Eden Phillpotts' finest stories, The Secret Woman, published in 1905. The walk will explain who lived there and how it came to be the evocative ruin it is today.
The walk, which is led by Chris Walpole, leaves Belstone Village Hall at 1.30pm on Sunday April 15 and aims to be back at the hall for a cream tea by 4pm. Please wear boots and keep dogs under close control.
Suggested donations for hall funds are £2 for the walk and £5 for the walk and cream tea.
