ACTIVISTS from the Dartmoor Preservation Association honoured their patron, the late Lady Sylvia Sayer, with two special walks on the moor from Belstone on Sunday. The association?s president, Kate Ashbrook, who worked alongside Lady Sayer for more than 20 years, said the walks marked what would have been her 101st birthday. ?It is therefore a great opportunity both to pay tribute to her outstanding work to preserve Dartmoor?s wildness and integrity and to recognise our achievements and the challenges that lie ahead,? she said. Lady Sayer was chairman of the DPA from 1951 to 1973 and then its patron until she died in 2000. She was also a vice-president of the Council for National Parks and of the Ramblers? Association. Ms Ashbrook added: ?We are upholding her great tradition to keep Dartmoor wild and free, against enormous odds. ?We shall never forget the example she set us. We shall battle on, invigorated by her memory.?
