A WEST Devon charity which helps women affected by domestic abuse has this week issued an appeal for more volunteers to help its vital work. West Devon Women?s Aid is a registered charity run by women, for women affected by domestic abuse within the borough. A spokesperson for the charity said: ?We are always keen to encourage more volunteers to join our team, helping provide confidential support and information, through a Helpline and face to face support, for women who are experiencing domestic abuse at the moment, or who have been affected by it in the past. ?Our volunteers are a highly valued part of our service and receive comprehensive, all expenses paid training.? Volunteers do not have to have any formal qualifications, but the charity is looking for women who already have, or are able to quickly acquire, good listening and counselling skills; who demonstrate empathy, are genuine, non-judgemental and will positively accept all women who use the service. The spokesperson said: ?Ideally, outreach project volunteers will be able to attend the Helpline for one or more three hour sessions per week, and in addition, to have one or more one hour face-to-face sessions with a women every week.? Travel expenses are paid for all work done on behalf of West Devon Women?s Aid and the charity encourages volunteers to continue their self-development through further training, funding for which is negotiable with the service. All volunteers receive regular support and will have the opportunity to be involved in publicity and awareness raising for West Devon Women?s Aid. The next training course is due to start on Monday 9th May for 9 weeks. Anyone interested in joining West Devon Women?s Aid as a volunteer should call Janice Goodwin on 01837 53321 to hear more and to receive a volunteer application pack.
