WEST Devon was recently visited by Crown Prince Shwebomin of Burma, who visited local charities and heritage sites.

Prince Shwebomin, who has spent more than 40 years in exile due to military rule, came to West Devon to visit his friend, Bere Alston resident Trevor Paddon-Hall.

During his stay the prince visited Buckland Abbey, met with youngsters and their parents connected with Powerpack, a Devon and Cornwall charity, and attended a charity ball at the Moorland Links near Yelverton, in aid of leprosy sufferers.

The visit to Buckland Abbey, arranged by Baron Trevor Paddon-Hall of the Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem and Johnathan Cummings, visitor service manager at the Abbey, followed the Commandery of Avalon charity ball.

After his visit to Buckland, Crown Prince Shwebomin said: 'This is a most impressive and beautiful reminder of English Heritage. The National Trust and its volunteers here must be proud to exhibit such a fine house.

'This visit has been a wonderful experience and I am looking forward to returning to Devon next year.'

Powerpack, formed in 2005, was also grateful to their royal visitor, as the Prince Shwebomin agreed to be the charity's new patron.

Powerpack was formed by parents who felt there was a real lack of opportunities available for their physically challenged children.

Prince Shwebomin said: 'It is always a pleasure to support physically challenged young people. These children are particularly special and enthusiastic for life, so I could not say no. I am delighted to be asked and very honoured to lend my name to this charity.'
