A VIRTUAL beehive, ostrich meat and Devon mozzarella are just a few of the delights on offer at this weekend's Okehampton Farmers' Market. The event takes place between 9am and 1pm on Saturday February 16. Honey producer Peter Hunt, from Buckfast Abbey Apiaries, will be present with other beekeepers to demonstrate a virtual beehive. The hive is a teaching hive, without bees, that demonstrates the intricate work that bees do. There will also be opportunities for people to find out how they can keep bees and produce their own honey. Halwill Junction beekeeper, Linda Davies, said: 'The role bees play in pollination provides us with most of our foods. 'With the rise of disease threatening from Europe and America, beekeepers are being urged to become formally qualified to keep bees by taking the Basic Certificate of Beekeeping. 'There are many reasons to keep supporting the Okehampton Farmers' Market — the local produce is some of the highest quality around and on Saturday there will be the chance to learn about the vital roles bees play.' This weekend's market will also see the return of fish, for the first time in months. There will also be a selection of speciality breads, a range of chicken, pork, beef, lamb and venison, unique cheeses, vegetables, preserves and cider.
