A HIGH-TECH blitz is being planned in West Devon in the coming month, according to telecommunications giant BT. The company is due to upgrade 56 exchanges in Devon and Cornwall in the 31-day period starting yesterday (Wednesday), enabling customers to receive high-speed broadband internet access. The exchanges at Ashwater, Beaworthy, Bratton Clovelly, Lewdown and Poundsgate are due to be upgraded on July 13. Beaford will receive the upgrade on July 22. These exchanges are six of 26 exchanges in Devon due to be enabled during the month. Lizzie Beesley, BT?s South West regional director, said: ?This is a tremendous step forward for the far South West. I don?t believe there are any other counties in England or Wales which have seen so many exchanges upgraded in such a relatively short period of time. Once this latest stage of the programme has been completed, more than 99% of households and businesses will have access to broadband.? Broadband means users can access the internet far more quickly ? it allows customers to obtain permanent access to the web without the need to dial up and frees up their telephone line too.
