A VETERANS team met the current Bere Alston football team as part of the village's carnival week. The friendly match took place on Sunday, May 6, the day after the carnival parade, in the mud of the recreation field, with the result being a 7-1 defeat for the veterans. The Bank Holiday Monday fun day continued despite unfavourable weather. Tamar Gym Club, a dog show, falconry display and African drumming were enjoyed, along with various stalls and exhibitions. The latter included the WI, Running on Wheels, cubs and scouts, and Hope Cottage. A magician and Punch and Judy show entertained children, and felt making was tried by many visitors. Proceeds from the day, along with those from other carnival committee events, will be donated to groups in Bere Alston and provide hanging baskets for the village. A scarecrow competition was launched on the day, to be judged on July 15, with a prize of £30.
