TWO men who have run Horrabridge Football Club for the past three years received the Commanders? Good Citizenship Award at the Chief Constable?s Award Ceremony. The award citation said Cory Jones, 20, and Brendan Phelan, 45, had run the club and coached the then Under 11s team and their commitment had ?had a positive effect within the village of Horrabridge, providing children with a focus and interest within their local community?. The citation stated: ?Cory Jones is a role model and inspiration to the young people living in the area, whilst Brendan Phelan regularly liaises with parents regarding a variety of issues and there has been a positive effect on youth related crime and reported incidents.? Both men had given ?a huge amount of time? to the club, attending every Thursday evening and Saturday morning as well as regularly taking the children throughout the winter to the Bickleigh Barracks astroturf pitch. Cory said he was ?very proud? to have received the award: ?I have gained a great deal of enjoyment during my time as manager.? He was only 17 when he took over as manager and said the boys ?came first? ? so much so that he has turned down an invitation to play for Horrabridge A team as it would clash with the younger team?s games. Brendan said that after his son?s first game for the club it was announced that Cory was going to manage the club and a request was made for someone to help him. He volunteered and had been doing it ever since. He said the award was a ?great honour? and the award ceremony had been a ?very humbling? experience, seeing all the people who had done brave and amazing things. ?But we got an award for playing football!? he said. Both thanked PC David Burgess for putting them forward for the award. The ceremony took place at Oldway Manor, Paignton. The two men are pictured left with senior police officers.
