Calstock is set to become a ‘village of lights’ in the run up to Christmas this year.

Eco-artist, retired art teacher and National Trust volunteer Chrissy Wallis is hosting a lantern making workshop in preparation for the village’s procession of lights event.

The workshop takes place this Saturday (December 4) from 10am-3.30pm at Calstock Village Hall.

Workshop-goers will sketch and make geometric-shaped lanterns which will be crafted from stripped willow – a sustainable biodegradable material.

Chrissy is encouraging anyone to attend as this event is suitable for all ages. Booking in advance is essential to attend and children must be accompanied by an adult. Participants are asked to make a donation to cover materials and running costs.

The lanterns made at the event will feature in the procession of lights through the village on December 16.

The event sees people meet to walk through the village and around the wetland with lights and lanterns, ending up at the village hall where refreshments including mulled wine and mince pies will be waiting.

The procession is free and open to everyone – those with their own lanterns at home who do not attend the workshop are encouraged to join in too.

Those participating should meet outside Calstock Community Primary School at 5.30pm.

The school is conducting its own event switching on its Advent window at 5pm.

These promise to be fun-filled, festive events for the village.

Originally inspired by the Truro City of Lights event, Chrissy has been making and designing lanterns for over 16 years. She has previously taught workshops all around Cornwall, made gigantic lanterns for the Port Eliot Festival and helped organise the midsummer’s eve event on Kit Hill.
