Ivybridge U15 12 Okehampton U15 13 ON a flat pitch with a strong wind behind them the visitors exerted plenty of pressure in the early exchanges with fly half Rob North continually pushing the home side back with some long and accurate kicking. From a probing kick forward the Ivybridge threes were caught offside when following up the clearing kick. North took the opportunity to secure the three points from the penalty. Shortly afterwards hooker Tom Chisolm had to leave the field following a facial injury allowing for the ever improving Martin Moyes to come into the front row with Matt Stratton reverting to his familiar hooking role. After a period of even play the Ivybridge forwards began to set up a succession of powerful driving mauls. After the ball had been moved through several phases of play the home side eventually broke the resilient Okehampton defence to score an unconverted try that saw the half time score at 5-3 to the home side. Early in the second half the Okes were under constant pressure which led to a period in the game where lack of concentration and indiscipline helped the home side to a further converted try to bring the score to 12-3. Gradually the visitors began to regain their resolve and focus and again started to force mistakes from their opponents. The back row of Wonnacott, Harding and Barrington began to cause all manner of problems and with both Dave White and Josh Moshman forcing midfield errors enabling some telling interceptions, the game began to swing in the Okes favour. Some good interplay between Phil Harding and Jon Harwood saw the second row forward thwarted by a last ditch tackle forcing a line out 5 metres from the Ivybridge line. The Okes won possession but from a resulting ruck the home side were deemed offside. Srcum half John Radnor took a quick tapped penalty but with the defence deliberately impeding his progress from no more than 3 metres out the referee had no alternative to award the penalty try . North converted to bring the score to 12-10. After another period of concerted pressure the home side were again forced into conceding a penalty. Winger Liam Walker who had done a great job marshalling his extremely quick opposite number all morning, stepped up to the plate and slotted the kick from some 35 metres out. With very little time left the Okes maintained possession to run down the clock for a hard earned victory which was a testimony to their spirit and determination to fight back from a 9 point deficit to record a 13-12 win. On Sunday ? Bude at home, kick off 11am. l Club congratulations went to John Radnor and Rob North for their selection into the Devon Under 15 squad. All team mates, coaches and friends wish them every success in their first county game this weekend.
