YELVERTON branch of the Royal British Legion held a Victory Party on Saturday to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the second world war. The celebration was held at Stroll, the home of Capt David Wixon and his wife in the grounds of Swings and Roundabouts ? Mrs Wixon?s Garden Toy display. The children, some in wartime fancy dress, were able to play freely on trampolines, slides, climbing frames and go-karts. Trevor Minnett and Harry Philpott, of the Devon and Cornwall Military Vehicle Club, joined the celebrations with their world war two ?Dingo? armoured car and USA Jeep. There was a display of model steam engines by Jim Greenwood and Dartmoor Radio Club rigged a world war two field communications centre. Various stalls were laid on by the Women?s Royal British Legion in Yelverton. Poppy Appeal long service awards were presented by the Devon County vice-chairman Brian Cumming to Winnie Thomas (50 years), Colin Vass and Molly Elliot (30 years), Jenny Kay (20 years), Sam Jones, Linda Downing and Marion Taylor (15 years) and Tessa Thompson (10 years.) With the accent on children having an exciting and exhausting day of fun and play, a sum of £450 was raised and organisers were delighted. The event was well supported by the local business community, with raffle prizes donated by the Arundel Arms, Leg O? Mutton Inn, Lewtrenchard Hotel, Overcombe Hotel, Knightstone Tea Rooms, Moxham?s Garage, Maxwell Executive Travel, Bidder?s Butcher, Tony Merriot?s Fish, Skylark Inn, Drake Manor Inn, Champernowne Nurseries and many private donations.
