Whitchurch 1st XI v Kingskerswill 1st XI

WHITCHURCH?s Chappell was soon in the action, winning the toss again but this time electing to bat first. Barely had the spectators settled in their deckchairs and he was on his way back to the pavilion having been surprised by a misdirected full toss first ball of the innings.

Hall and Credicott batted watchfully against some tight bowling. Indeed Kingskerswill off-spin bowler Harding conceded a mere seven runs in his 13 overs. Just as Credicott was beginning to open up he fell lbw to one of the numerous antipodean-led appeals that punctuated the afternoon quiet.

Clapham came in to hit a breezy 11 but at 49 for 3 after 28 overs Whitchurch?s hold on the match was not secure. The middle order contributed some quick runs (and quick wickets) to set the stage for Hall (47), Elliott (28no), Bray (15) to increase the scoring rate in the last ten overs.

The seventh and eighth wickets provided an invaluable 50 runs to enable Whitchurch to post a very respectable 170 for 8 in their 4 overs.

In the Kingskerswill innings McDougall struck early taking two wickets and bowling with venom, accuracy and frequent loud appeals. Lavis, bowling from the sea-side end gave the batsmen no respite and he was well supported by Newton when he spirited whippet-like to hold onto a skyer.

With wickets tumbling regularly (Jackson 3 for 11, Bray 2 for 40) Kingskerswill never looked like reaching the target. The first nail in their coffin was provided by McDougall?s hard and flat throw from midwicket to run out their opening batsman.

There was a brief flurry of four and sixes towards the end of their innings but Elliott came on to draw proceedings to a close when their number 11 holed out to Credicott at deep mid-on.

Kingskerswill were all out for 116 in the 31st over so Whitchurch won by 54 runs.

This Saturday Whitchurch are away to Lewdown.
