Devon & Exeter League, Premier Division Okehampton Argyle 0 Axminster 1 AFTER winning at Axminster last week Argyle were looking to do the double and secure three more valuable points in their bid to avoid relegation. Axminster, who were caught by surprise by the quality of Argyle?s play last week, made a much more positive start in this encounter. The writing may have been on the wall as early as the seventh minutes, when a goalbound shot which beat Okehampton?s keeper Scott Leaman saw defender Mike Vernon clear off the line. This early warning made Argyle tighten up their defence, so play then developed into a midfield battle. Argyle had their best chance to score early in the second half when Robbie Sandercock broke through the Axminster defence and forced their keeper to make a brilliant one handed save. Both sides were forced to make changes due to injuries, and as time moved into the last 15 minutes it looked more likely that one goal would be enough to win the match. Unfortunately for Argyle the goal came from an inswinging corner kick by Axminster which, helped by a strong wind, deceived Scott Leaman. Although Argyle put pressure on Axminster during the closing ten minutes, they could not find a way through a stubborn defence. Okehampton have a chance to make amends next week, when they travel to bottom of the table Willand Rovers, kick off 3pm.
