MORE than 100 visitors enjoyed the summer flower show on Saturday, filling Meavy Parish Hall with vibrant colour.
With excellent standards maintained by all the exhibits, much thought was needed to choose the best in each class as visitors' votes are used to select the winners. There was a large number of entries in classes for cut flowers, miniature arrangements and vegetables.
There was strong competition for the Gordon Cross trophy for which the points system of selecting the winner means achieving both second and third places in a class is equivalent to a first.
Guest of honour to present the trophies was Christine Gibson, who has actively supported the society for many years.
Mike Inman made sure everyone paid the entrance fee, Mary Helby carried off the duties of show secretary well, with some fun asides and Doris Potter enticed a lot of money from pockets and purses for the raffle prizes. Avril Back organised teas and home-made cakes, while Douglas Henderson and society president Cyril Sparey sold members' plants. Chairman Brenda Burt thanked Christine, Mary and all who helped to make another highly successful show.
Northwood Water Gardens, St Neot, will be visited by private car on September 6, and the next meeting will be in Meavy Parish Hall on September 19 at 7.30pm. when Brian Hiley will talk of 'Container Plants and Something Different'. Visitors are always welcome, for details call 01822 852984.
