YELVERTON Seconds returned to B Division action last Saturday when they travelled to bottom of the table Ivybridge.
Skipper Dave Scott won the toss and asked Ivybridge to bat first. The opening attack of Matt Tamsett and Chris Pearson soon hit their line and length and this combined with the slow, low nature of the wicket made run scoring difficult. Pearson struck first, enticing one of the Ivybridge openers to lob up a catch to Adam Nicholas with the score on seven. The remaining opener followed in Pearson's next over in the same fashion to leave Ivybridge struggling on 15-2. Jerry Warland replaced Tamsett and in his first over he enticed T Mailing to chip a gentle catch, allowing Nicholas to complete a hat-trick of catches close in.
N Lancaster showed some determination in making 14, but when he chipped a catch to Richard Porritt at mid-off, the score was a parlous 31-4. This soon became 34-5 as Gerry Keen caught S Williams for a duck in the gully off the bowling of Warland.
Ivybridge skipper A Abraham in partnership with H Solomon put on 38 for the sixth wicket, before Solomon was caught at first slip by Mike Chetwynd off the bowling of Warland. Warland (8-3-28-4) then caught and bowled S McGrath to leave the score 84-7. Pearson (13-2-44-4) bowled Abraham for a well played 45 with the last ball of his final over and Mike Chetwynd wrapped up the Ivybridge innings with two wickets in two balls in his first over, Ivybridge being bowled out for 100 off 28 overs.
Yelverton started their reply before tea and openers Mike Chetwynd and Ricky McDowell took the score to 36 off the first four overs, before Chetwynd smashed into square legs hands for a bright and breezy 21. Fellow opener McDowell fell on the same score to leave the bohemians on 40–2 at the tea interval. On the resumption, the third wicket pair of Richard Porritt and Gerry Keen quickly knocked off the remaining runs in an unbroken partnership of 68 – Porritt unbeaten on 27 and Keen on 39 to see Yelverton home off 19.3 overs to claim a maximum 20 point haul.
Man of the match – veteran Jerry Warland for his 4-28 spell. Next week, Yelverton entertain mid-table Bideford and Westward Ho! at Langton Park, 2.30pm.
