AN act of ?mindless vandalism? caused £500 worth of damage ? to a disabled man?s invalid carriage. Tavistock resident Rob Jennings? invalid carriage was overturned in the incident in the early hours of last Thursday morning, following Goose Fair. Mr Jennings said it was partly the design of the vehicle that enabled them to turn it over. ?But it is high sided and heavy, so I assume whoever did it must have had one or two people to help,? he said. ?I am assuming it is the fault of one or two individuals who got a bit intoxicated and decided to have a bit of a laugh. It was an act of mindless vandalism. ?It isn?t the financial side but the principle of it and the physical disruption caused that bothers me. And more to the point was the danger posed: there was quite a considerable puddle of fuel and coolant fluid, which could have caught fire.? Mr Jennings said he had moved to Tavistock from near Windsor in Berkshire. ?When I was up there actions such as this were rather more common, but you don?t expect to get this in a semi-rural town like Tavistock,? he said. Devon and Cornwall Police diversity officer PC Mark Hoar said he thought it was ?a stupid prank? not directed at Mr Jennings as a disabled person. However, the offenders should be caught as someone should be made to pay for the damage, PC Hoar said. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the police quoting crime reference number JT/051423.
