VANDALS have certainly left their mark on the cricket pitch at Okehampton College.

Those responsible struck two weeks ago and sprayed the wicket with 'I love u' on a pitch which is not just used by the school, but also Okehampton Cricket Club.

Although it has not stopped the cricketers playing, it has left them their wicket damaged and unsightly and although not permanent, it will take a long time before it rubs off with wear.

James Stevens, a club cricketer whose firm Stevens' Estate Agents of Okehampton sponsors the team, said it was frustrating that people would want to commit such an act.

He said: 'It's a real shame and unfortunately it is an example of the small minority ruining it for the majority of people who just want to enjoy their sport.

'A fence to protect the wicket is just not viable due to its location.'

'I just want to get the message across that there really is no need for such mindless vandalism.'
