I WAS dismayed, (though sadly, not surprised) to hear that Tavistock Town Council are using a sledge hammer to crack a nut in the case of the alleged ?trespass? across the cattle market car park, Pixon Lane (Times, September 29). Perhaps their eagerness to incur legal fees is a contributory factor to the ever-spiralling level of council tax with which we are burdened? But the two points which most concern me are, a) they are stating as a fait accompli their plans to create a pay and display car park, but I have seen no public notice to this effect or application for planning permission. After all, it may well be that the people of Tavistock do not agree with Col Howard that it would be for the ?good of the town?, as the Riverside Car Park remains half empty. And, b) If Ms Jones can be retrospectively charged for that alleged trespass, does that mean that the many hundreds of people who cross that area daily can also be charged? I would have thought that, as the public at large have enjoyed access over the land for well over twenty years, and in the absence of any signs restricting or forbidding access, right of way would not be hard to establish.
