A WELL used village green in Albaston, built ten years ago to celebrate the millennium, is at risk of closing unless new trustees come forward.
The green was one of only three in Cornwall built to celebrate the year 2000 but the management committee is dwindling, with only four people left on it out of a possible eleven.
Trustee Ginny Jackett said the green was well established and used by the local community for events such as the village fete, primary school activities, church activities, music festivals, picnics, games, kite flying or just by people wanting to enjoy the views.
'Some trustees have left recently and others wish to step down due to age or personal circumstances,' she said.
'We have all been there practically since the beginning and we desperately need some new blood and new ideas. If there are no volunteers the green may have to close permanently.'
An extraordinary meeting is being held on June 25 at 6.30pm in the Queen's Head pub at Albaston to which all interested parties and people from the village are invited to attend.
The village green, which extends to around one acre, cost £60,000 to create with local fundraising and a grant from the Countryside Agency. It is the only communal space in the village.
The trustees have a small fund which they currently use to pay someone to cut the grass but the money is running out and new fundraising ideas are needed.
'There is not a huge amount of work to do, just someone to keep an eye on it and make sure it is regularly maintained,' added Mrs Jackett.
'If there is someone out there who would be prepared to research what grants might be available that would be great too.
'After ten years I think people would really miss the village green if we had to close it. We would like to see it carry on for generations. It would be horrible to see it covered in houses.
