RAIN did not stop play as far as the football tournament was concerned, when the revamped recreation field at Bere Ferrers was officially opened by West Devon Mayor Cllr Christine Grills on Bank Holiday Monday.
The recreation field now boast swings, picnic tables, a slide, a cableway, seats, a willow bird hide, the Horseshoe Marsh wildlife area, a cycle circuit, a five-a-side football pitch, a dog walking area, car parking and a dual tennis/basketball court.
The finishing touch is a barbecue recently constructed by management committee member William Spearing.
Cllr Grills, who was accompanied by her consort and husband, Norman, thanked major sponsor Sport England and everyone who had helped over the years towards creating such a splendid games field. She presented tokens of her appreciation to committee members Daphne McDonald, Melody Mason and Gordon Spiers.
Dr Paul Hudson presented Cllr Grills with a symbolic cheque for £32,500 on behalf of Sport England and congratulated the organisers ? the Bere Ferrers Villagers Group ? and the community on attaining their aim: a magnificent multi-purpose recreation field in a wonderful setting overlooking the River Tavy.
Others present included the chairman of the parish council, Cllr Eaon Wager, together with parish councillors and the rector, the Rev Nick Law.
The football tournament organised by Trevor Grinstead kicked off the proceedings, followed by children?s fun games run by Robin Musgrave, Ruth Charlton and Hazel Ward.
Due to the adverse weather, several events ? including the tennis tournament, tug-of-war, cycle speed trials and wildlife talk ? had to be cancelled.
Refreshments were provided by the Bere Ferrers WI and the raffle and sales table was manned by Melody Mason and friends.
