Devon 2 League North Tawton 13 Plymouth Arguam 8 THIS was the last league fixture for North Tawton and they were looking for a positive outcome to finish the season. From the kick-off, Plymouth Arguam attacked and were close to scoring. The home side withstood the early onslaught and played themselves back into the match as they found their composure. From a lineout throw by hooker Neil Davis, taken well by Number 8 Adam Hooper, a sequence of plays followed which resulted finally in a penalty being conceded by Arguam on the 22 metre line. Fly-half Tom Davis converted well to give Tawton a slender three point lead. On about 25 minutes a scrum on Arguam?s 5 metre line gave the visiting side a chance to clear their lines. The superior strength of the home side?s pack, however, pushed them off their own ball and as the scrum broke up Tawton?s second-row Steve Hann spotted the loose ball and dived through to score a well-deserved try. The conversion was missed and the score at half time remained 8-nil to North Tawton. From the start of the second half Arguam continued their assault of the Tawton half, with the benefit of the strong following wind. Their scrum was also starting to compete more in the set plays; finally this resulted in a good drive from a line out close to Tawton?s line and Paul Vencourt touched down for the visitors? first score. This was not converted, but Arguam kept up the pressure and were awarded a penalty soon after as Tawton drove over the top of a ruck. This was converted by captain and fly-half Darren Wills to level the scores at 8-all. Canny flanker play from North Tawton?s experienced Richard Lethbridge helped his team to a good position close to the Arguam 5 metre line, but they were unable to cross the line. After an extended period a good ball from the advancing scrum was fed to Charlie Ewen breaking through from full back. The initial charge was stopped but from the resulting ruck, Ewen again came up with the ball and crossed the line for an excellent individual try. The conversion was missed, leaving the score at 13-8 to North Tawton. Tawton were well in charge at this stage and following the final substitution of Andy Pyle for captain Kevin Avery they were unlucky to miss out on two further tries, one for Phil Wale who was deemed to have crossed the dead ball line before touching down. Later another quick tap penalty taken by Tawton?s Neil Davis was fed to Richard Lethbridge who cut through the stretched Arguam defence for the touch down, only for play to be called back and the penalty given the other way. North Tawton now look forward to the final weekend of the season when they entertain a touring RAF side on Saturday April 30 and the annual fun match between TNT Ladies and North Tawton men?s side on the Sunday May 1.
