I LIVE in the area of upper Horrabridge and the problem here with daytime bonfires is horrendous. Every beautiful day is spoilt by smoke and I am sick and tired of having to close my windows to prevent smoke entering the house. I have given up trying to dry washing outside because it is a waste of time and energy. The people responsible for lighting fires will obviously not have washing on their lines ? it doesn?t appear to matter about their neighbours. It used to be an unwritten ?rule? when I was a youngster that fires were never lit until evening ? a ?good neighbour? policy. I was even told by a local Liberal Democrat councillor that there are bye-laws to prevent this kind of thing continually happening. However, in today?s culture of ?I?m all right Jack, blow the rest of you?, such things don?t seem to make any difference. It would be nice if people were a little more thoughtful about those who live around them. While I am writing to you about unsocial behaviour, can I also just say something about barking dogs? Why, oh why do people think it is acceptable to allow their dogs to bark without being checked for up to half an hour before six in the morning and after eleven at night? I know dogs bark and can happily accept the fact at reasonable hours, but I object to being woken at six o?clock when I don?t have to get up and late at night when I have gone to sleep, by thoughtless people who allow their dogs to go on barking unchecked.
