Devon Premier cup Waldon Athletic 2 Okehampton Argyle 0 THIS was another good performance by Argyle without the end product. In a very even first 30 minutes both sides struggled to create any clear openings and this was mainly due to both keepers dominating their areas and acting as sweepers every time the ball was played through the defence. However, on 30 minutes Athletic opened the scoring when the ball was spread wide and then squared to the penalty spot for an easy tap in from close range. Okehampton did enjoy some good periods of play and Chris Wills and Steve Kinsey linked up well down the Argyle left side, but they were unable to create the killer pass to level the scores. Argyle did test their opponents? keeper when Philip Evans met a Wills corner with a low drive that went straight to the keeper. Argyle started the second half brightly and Steve Williams was unlucky when he beat two defenders with his pace and unleashed a shot that the keeper did well to save instinctively with his feet. Argyle continued to pressurise their opponents for long periods and were unable to fashion a clear opening with Robbie Miller, George Pitts and Steve Kinsey all having shots blocked as Athletic defended desperately. As is the case so many times in football, if you do not take your chances then you inevitably get punished, and on 70 minutes this happened to the visitors. Argyle conceded a foul on the edge of the area and up stepped Athletic?s No 6 to strike a shot worthy of winning any game and nestling the ball in the top corner of the Argyle net. Okehampton continued to play some good football without any reward and on 75 minutes made some changes, bringing on youngsters Mathew Saunders and Robert Clark for George Pitts and Elliott Collins, but it was too late in the game to have any impact and Athletic held out to go through to the next round. Next week Argyle return to league action and are away to Alphington, hoping to climb further up the table with a win. Kick-off 2.15pm. South West Peninsula League Okehampton Argyle 2 Stoke Gabriel 3 THIS exciting and open game was played in good spirit with chances throughout. Both teams created several chances during the opening 30 minutes of this contest with the play flowing from end to end, but both keepers were in fine form and managed to keep the scores level until the 32nd minute. Stoke pressured Argyle and the ball broke to the edge of the Argyle area and Stoke?s number eight had time to strike a superb shot wide of Daniel Malcolm. Argyle?s James Williams broke up the play deep in defence and played a ball over the Stoke defence for Steve Williams to bring a good save out of the keeper. Robbie Clark for Argyle was forced to leave the field on 30 minutes and was replaced by Robbie Sandercock on the left wing. Stoke Gabriel started the second half brightly and were determined to make sure they went home with the points after the shock defeat earlier in the season when Argyle beat them by the odd goal, knocking them off the top of the league. When Argyle play their passing game they do look as good as any other team in this new league. Mike Vernon won a good ball in the heart of the Argyle defence and sent Chris Wills down the right flank, forcing another good save out of the visitors? keeper. Stoke Gabriel were very quick to turn defence into attack and open up Argyle on 75 minutes, then forced another good save out of Malcolm. From the resulting corner the ball fell nicely to their number 11, who calmly volleyed home. Argyle made two substitutions, bringing on George Pitts for Philip Evans and Stuart Cann for Elliott Collins. Okehampton pulled a goal back on 80 minutes when Chris Wills was quick to react to a loose ball hammering in from just inside the box. With Argyle having to press forward for the equaliser they were once again caught out by the quick breakaway of Stoke and their number 15 made no mistake hammering in from close range. Argyle did add to their tally when Steve Williams was brought down in the area and Robbie Miller stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way from the spot kick. Stoke did enough to hold on to the lead with just minutes remaining and Argyle were unlucky once again not to take any points from the game.
