A £1-MILLION development to help new businesses in West Devon is being initiated by the borough council.

Work begins later this year to build a mix of 15 workshops and offices at the Pitts Cleave Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Tavistock.

The managed workspace units will be specifically for businesses that are starting up and will be built using money from the council, the South West of England Regional Development Agency and the EU Objective 2 Programme.

Cllr Nick Morgan, chairman of West Devon Borough Council?s economic, leisure and community development committee said: ?This will bring to the Tavistock area much needed units which will provide the opportunity for new businesses to develop. These sort of businesses have an important role in developing the local economy.?

Tim Beavon, West Devon?s economic development manager, said that the units had proved particularly popular in other areas of the county.

He said: ?The units will be specifically for businesses with good growth prospects and will allow them to become established before they move on to larger premises.?

The units are expected to be completed by the spring of next year.
