CASTLE Drogo has been giving away some of its trade secrets as the conservation team have begun conserving and cleaning all of the books in the castle library. Not that this is unusual, but what is unique is that this will be done whilst open to the public. Michael Thomson, house manager, said: ?This is a great opportunity to see conservation cleaning taking place while we are open, rather than behind closed doors in the winter months. ?This is an eclectic collection of works of the late 19th to early 20th century encapsulating a time that is long forgotten. ?The books spend most of their lives sat on the shelves and this is a wonderful opportunity to see close up what lies between their covers.? The conservation in action will take place each weekday (excluding Tuesdays) between 11.30am and 4pm with a variety of different projects being undertaken over the next few months. Normal admission prices apply. The highlight of the events calendar at Drogo is the annual World War Two event on September 15 and 16 which this year promises to be even bigger in scale and to capture the atmosphere of wartime Britain. There will be numerous vehicles and displays from the Military Vehicle Trust, including wartime ambulances, trucks and jeeps and Land Army, bomb disposal and a War dogs display. There will also be a mock battle re-enactment between the British, American and German troops each day at 2.30pm which promises to be really exciting. Families can also step back in time and follow the trail to find out what life was like as a wartime evacuee at Castle Drogo as well as being entertained by Heuristics and their exciting range of wartime activities. Normal admission charges apply and £2 for trail (including prize). Telephone (01647) 433306 for more information.
