A CRAPSTONE resident has been chosen as the UK Independence Party?s standard bearer in the South West Devon constituency. Hugh Williams, an accountant, was selected as prospective parliamentary candidate last week. He told party members at a public meeting in Plympton that he was urging voters to put country before traditional party loyalty at the general election. He said Labour, the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives were all committed to the UK?s continued membership of the European Union ? UKIP was the only party that wanted to ?free the country from the bondage and expense of Brussels?. Whilst it would be unrealistic to expect UKIP to form the next government, it was vital to achieve a ?solid nucleus? of UKIP MPs to constantly challenge the executive and highlight ?the perils? of EU membership. Mr Williams? agent at the election will be his daughter, Emily. The South West constituency is held by Conservative Gary Streeter who had a majority of 7,144 over Labour at the 2001 general election.
