Okehampton U14s 64

THE Okehampton squad ventured into Cornwall on Sunday to meet their old rivals  Launceston.

With the weather improving in the late morning the game started with dry weather but on a wet pitch. From the beginning the Okes applied pressure and within minutes had scored their first try.

This set the tone of the game and despite their best efforts and the loan of Okehampton players Launceston could not raise their play to counter the attacks. In the first half Okehampton crossed the line five times and converted three of these tries .

The second half followed in the same vein with the Okehampton attack continuing on an increasingly muddy pitch.

The squad crossed the line another four times for converted tries and were on a try bonanza when halfway through the half the referee ended the game in accordance with the rules.

Okehampton tries were scored by Alex Arthers , Neil Folland, Paul Penberthy, Deane Andrew, Josh Bush, John Malseed and Matt Moyes.

OKEHAMPTON opened the scoring when Billy Searle broke from the back of the scrum and went over near the posts.

The forwards had their work cut out trying to contain a well drilled Launceston pack. Callum Pillavent and Ike Francis carried the ball well to make good ground and offloaded out of the tackle well.

Launceston came back with a well worked try from their rumbling forwards.Okehampton hit straight back when Will Cooper took a ball at pace on the blind side and fed Kyler Burns. He beat his man and fed Billy Searle to score.

Josh Bickley and Will Cooper led the way, stopping the mobile Launceston No 8 every time he went on the charge.

Okehampton's last try was the best so far this season. The forwards supplied quick ruck ball, going through all the backs' hands to Connor Vincent on the wing who looked certain to score. But a fantastic tackle from the Launceston full back stopped him in his tracks. Another quick ruck and the ball went back through the backs to Matt Baker on the other wing who stepped back inside his opponent to score his first try for the Okes.

New lads Jake Giles Phillips and Zack Ponsford had impressive games and thanks go to Callum Barber who played for Launceston. They finished the game with a well deserved try after five minutes of constant pressure.

OKEHAMPTON were unfortunate to lose their first game against local rivals Tavistock. In a tight match the home side scored after a strong individual run from the impressive Gregory Daniel, whose forceful running caused havoc in the visitors' defence all morning. It was a better performance all round from the home side, who with a bit of luck and without a couple of missed tackles, could here sneaked a victory.

In the second match the Okes secured their first victory of the season. A good team effort saw them triumph 25-5 with tries coming at regular intervals from Gregory Daniel (2), Leon Horne, Ollie Ardon and Matthew Haygarth.

AN Okehampton side missing a few regulars travelled to Polson on Sunday morning and came away with a hard fought victory.

On a wet morning, encountering a narrow pitch, the Okes defended manfully. In a game of few scoring chances, whippet-like Leon Horne proved to be the decisive factor as he scooted over for two tries.

The whole team showed improved tackling technique and the win was no more than their gritty display merited.

This week, with reinforcements returning and hopefully improved rucking, the boys will be seeking another away victory at Exeter Saracens.
