THE ART and poetry of William Blake and work by composers such as Tippett and Tavener have inspired an exhibition of embroidery by Jean Hillyer, currently on display at Hatherleigh's the Salar Gallery.

Jean is the wife of Norman Hillyer, who was vicar of Hatherleigh in the 1980s. While living at Hatherleigh she took up needlepoint and has been developing various ideas ever since they retired to Sherborne.

'Inspired by Music' is the title of the exhibition of needlepoint pictures and sculptures. Jean uses traditional stitches but in an original manner with a special emphasis on tactile qualities — some of which were made specifically for blind people.

Titles include eight tapestries based on the Four Elements — Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

Also on display at this exhibition, which runs until December 29, are sculptures by Sophie Howard of a clarinetist, cellist and mandolin player.

Entry to the exhibition is free but donations — to be divided between Hospiscare (Exeter and District) and Quaker Action on Alcohol and Drugs — will be gratefully received.
