IT is going to be a lean time for a group of hungry Hatherleigh youngsters. After a brief feast ? with their hands tied so they will not find eating easy!? they are embarking on a 24-hour fast . . .
But it is all for a good cause. Under the watchful eye of Connect youth worker Niki Gollings they will be embarking on the venture to raise money for World Vision, a charity which helps starving people in Third World countries.
Niki, 25, from Hatherleigh, said the 24-hour food-free-zone would start at mid-day on Saturday, February 22 with a ?big feast? in Hatherleigh Square. ?Then the 24-hour famine starts. To make it easy for them there will be games and they will be taken to the Waie Inn for skittles and swimming.?
The group of more than 20 youngsters will then return to the Vine Church where, inside, they will build a cardboard city to sleep in.
?In the morning they go to the Methodist Chapel for a united service there ? and after that there will be a feast for the youngsters and everyone that attends the service,? said Niki, whose role as youth worker is supported by the churches in Okehampton, Crediton and Chulmleigh.
?When we did this last year we raised about £200 for World Vision. The youngsters reckon they can beat that because this time more people are involved.?
