A NEW boat powered by solar energy was recently launched at Roadford Lake by Lady Mary Holborow DCVO, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall.

The electric boat was made especially for Roadford Lake — it is available for leisure trips on the lake, and was funded by the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE).

The launch was celebrated by the trustees and staff of South West Lakes Trust.

The boat enhances South West Lakes Trust's green credentials as its electric motors are solar powered, storing the energy in batteries, but in continuously cloudy conditions it can be connected to the mains supply to charge up.

The wheelchair- friendly new craft can seat 24 guests and will make round the lake trips and carry guests from Lakeside Café or the outdoor and active centre.

Evelyn Stacey, director of South West Lakes Trust, said: 'The new solar powered boat symbolises the trust's success in creating sustainable development in recreation.

'It is wonderful to be able to provide access to the lake for those who would like to enjoy the beauty of the lake from a larger vessel.'

The aim of the RDPE funded outdoor and active project is to create new activities for everybody.

The new attractions include a high rope course, an indoor climbing wall and archery at Outdoor and Active Roadford.

South West Lakes Trust won the Queen's Award in sustainable development in 2010 in recognition of its eco-friendly efforts and has received Green Tourism Business Scheme gold awards at its main sites.
