ATHLETES from West Devon exceeded expectations when they competed in the Mendip Triathlon at Cheddar near Bristol. Six weeks before, ten swimmers from Tavistock agreed to a schedule of swim, bike, run and transition training to achieve their first completion in a triathlon. On the day, Team West Devon, exceeded their expectations. Not only did everyone complete their race, four athletes achieved top three places. The hot summer?s afternoon started brilliantly with Sam Campbell-Hingston first out of the swim and taking third place overall in the Tristar 1 (9-10 age group). Rebecca Windamere then stormed to first place overall, over a minute ahead of the field, with the fastest bike and run in the girls Tristar 2 (11-12 age group). In the boys? Tristar 2 (11-12 age group) Sam Harmsworth performed with great consistency to take second place overall. Laura Radgick also took second with the fastest girls? swim of the day in the girls? youth (15-16 age group). Tom Grennan-Cruise with a strong swim and a flying bike start was well pleased to see the finish line after a good run, finishing eighth in boys? Tristar 2. Kirsty Smith, Catriona Smith and Laura Aspen changed places throughout the event to finish in good fifth, sixth and seventh positions in girls? Tristar 3. Tom Waddington in the biggest field of the day finished with a strong run in seventh place in boys? Tristar 3. And Jake Chinn, first out of the pool, finished in seventh against some very experienced opposition in the boys? youth. Paul Chinn, coach and team manager, was more than pleased that the results made Team West Devon the strongest team of the day ? a good match for the loudest parents of the day.
