TAVISTOCK Athletic Club's athlete of the month is Liz Vernon. Liz has competed as a triathlete for some time, but joined the club a year ago, with the aim of improving her running.
Liz recently competed in Ironman Austria, one of the toughest events there is. The race comprises a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile cycle race and a marathon-length run of 26.2 miles to finish. Competitors are allowed just 17 hours to complete the three disciplines, and Liz finished with hours to spare, in 13hours, 25minutes, 20 seconds.
Liz is a strong swimmer and she finished the distance in just over an hour, coming an excellent 10th in her age category.
The bike ride took her 6hrs 45mins 26secs, and Liz went on to complete the marathon in 5hrs 21mins 36secs – a truly great result for the distance even without the prior swim and bike beforehand!
Liz was presented with the club's award in honour of her Ironman achievement. She runs with the club to keep her speed up and motivation high and said 'running with TAC has improved my running so much, I would recommend anyone to join.'
Her plans for the future include competing in the London Marathon, with an aim of finishing in under four and a half hours. Liz is great company on a run, and a hugely strong-minded competitor.
