ON the principle that it is never too late to say thank you, I would like to say a huge thank you to each and everyone for their tremendous support on the correct pronunciation of MorwellHAM.
It came from people who have lived there, worked there, lived in the vicinity and attended the local schools. Also people from far and wide who have moved away from the area, some living abroad but, still keep in touch by reading the Times or by talking to friends and family. It is so encouraging that feelings run very high about preserving the pronunciation of our vocabulary and our place names, our history, our culture and our vernacular.
But how does one go about undoing all the harm that's been done over the years, to the correct pronunciation of MorwellHAM, with the development of the Edwardian Village and the production of Edwardian Farm? It has been suggested that like Morwell Barton, Morwell Green, Morwell Rocks, Morwell House, the name could be split into two or hyphenated so there is no dilemma or argument. If anybody wishes to communicate with me with any good ideas, my e-mail address is [email protected]">[email protected]
I would like to say to everyone once again, many, many thanks for your wholehearted support, from Hilary Charleston nee Shepherd, daughter of L J Shepherd, (deceased), senior surveyor and public health inspector for Tavistock Urban and Rural District Council, for whom I worked. Over the years, I never ever heard, throughout members of the Tavistock Council offices, residents of Tavistock and surrounding villages, those who attended local schools etc, of any pronunciation for MorwellHAM other than MorwellHAM. And to quote Rosemary Estall, Morwell-HAM it has always been and Morwell-HAM it will always be.
