WOMEN from across West Devon took part in a 14-mile walk last Saturday night to raise money for Derriford Hospital?s oncology department and Primrose breast cancer unit. A total of 339 women took part in Tavistock?s midnight walk, organised by ?Tavistock Star Trekkers?, to correspond with the Moonwalk in London, which also raised money for Cancer Care. ?Tavistock Star Trekkers?, decided to stage their own event in Tavistock after the London Moonwalk was over-subscribed. Dr Drabble and Dr Macleod from Derriford started the walk after Tavistock College?s PE teacher, Ashley Tossell, warmed up the crowd. Bev Rodgers, one of the organisers, said the first women to complete the walk finished within three hours and ten minutes ? even the women to come through last managed the 14 miles in four hours and 30 minutes. At the end of the walk medals and certificates were handed to each woman who took part. Bev said: ?It was absolutely wonderful. The atmosphere was terrific. At the end lots of people were asking if they can register for next year.? Yelverton Stores also participated in the walk and raised more than £600 for Derriford and expressed thanks to all of the local support. As the Times went to press the exact figure raised from this event was not known, but Bev hopes it will have raised more than £15,000 for Derriford Hospital.
