OKEHAMPTON Local History Society continues its theme of industrial archaeology with its latest talk on Wednesday, July 11.
Helen Harris will give a talk on the Haytor Tramway and Stover Canal in the Ockment Centre at 7.30pm. Mrs Harris is a well-known local historian who has done much work on the canals in the South West. She has also written several books, including one with George Thurlow about the Haytor Tramway. The tramway was built in 1820 to carry granite, to be used for building houses and bridges from high on Dartmoor to the Stover Canal.
Last month Maurice Thomas gave a talk on the National Trust's Dunsland House, which was destroyed by fire in 1954.
Meetings of the history group are held on the second Wednesday of each month at the Ockment Centre at 7.30pm. New members are always welcome, and anyone interested can contact secretary Jane Lehni on 01837 840087. Non-members may attend at a charge of £2 per person.
