THE Wharf in Tavistock hosts entertainment at either end of the spectrum for theatre goers at the beginning of March. Probably the UK leaders in opera highlights, Hatstand Opera, are arriving at The Wharf with Golden Moments from Opera on Thursday March 8 at 7.30pm. Most extracts are sung in English, including at least two popular 'pot-boilers' and something really unusual for the buffs. No need for subtitles, when compere and mezzo Kirsty Young introduces who singing what, when, and most importantly, why! Director Kirsty Young is delighted to be performing in Devon again: 'I spent many happy summers as a kid exploring Devon from our holiday flat in Exmouth, and loved returning here to perform at the Exeter Festival and Torquay. 'Now it's time to show the cast the delights of inland Devon — and entertain Devon with the delights of our chocolate-box selection of the best bits from opera.' Hatstand Opera have performed for packed audiences in castles, National Trust properties, village halls, art galleries, stately homes, gardens and theatres alike. With a 'go-anywhere' policy, Hatstand have sung at the Liberation Celebrations in Guernsey, in the open air for 7000 people, under 17th century Dutch masters at the National Gallery, for charity galas from Aberystwyth to Wick, at the Barbican Centre and a vineyard in Western Australia! Hatstand singers also perform with a wide variety of companies from Glyndebourne to Covent Garden, English National Opera to Phantom of the Opera. And on Saturday March 10, The Brotherhood of Man turn the clock back with their amazing musical show, The Seventies Story. The show covers all the big hits of the decade, but also includes a wide variety of other happenings. It covers the influence of The Goodies, Monty Python, The Generation Game and Dallas, plus the politics, the news, the gossip, the toys, the fashions — you name it, it's there!
