The focus for one of only two UK events planned for the launch on June 22, Tavistock will welcome the 'baguette baton' relay running between Dorset and Devon, arriving in style at a French Day set to take over the town.
The Tour de Manche is the last and longest of three new, family-friendly routes to be completed as part of the £6.8-million 'Cycle West' project.
The 1,200km (more than 700 miles) route can be ridden in bite-sized pieces or for more serious cyclists as a complete tour.
Working in partnership with West Devon Borough Council and Devon County Council, BID has secured the event to help put Tavistock on the map and boost tourism to the area.
Capitalising on Tavistock's existing 'pedal credentials' — the town has welcomed the 'Tour of Britain' on two occasions in the last five years — BID has already received media attention from the UK and across the Channel in the run-up to the launch.
As part of the festivities, the town will be going all 'Anglo-French' for the day and local businesses are invited to get on board.
Lisa Wadling, Tavistock BID manager, said: 'Tavistock is already recognised as a cycling hub thanks to the Drake's Trail and Route 27.
'This is a great opportunity for the town to maximise this association both on a regional, national and international stage. We want as many local shops and restaurants as possible to get involved, whether that's by putting on a special offer or an event, such as Anglo-French wine tasting, as part of the day.'
Any businesses interested in getting involved should contact Lisa at [email protected]">[email protected] or call 07789 112009.
